Help Us Maintain This Tribute to Workers and Community

The Mural: On July 24, 2024, the repainted Labor Builds Community mural was remounted on the wall of the A3 High School. The damage that had marred the original mural was repaired and this celebration of generations of working people began a new life. The efforts, skills, and donations of many people, artists, unions, elected officials, and organizations made this replacement possible.

The Maintenance Fund: Now we want to ensure that the mural will be taken care of well into the future. The Springfield Labor Mural Project has established a formal maintenance agreement between the Lane Arts Council and the Springfield Public Schools Facilities and Operations Department (SPSFO) to do just that. SPSFO will provide cleaning and regular maintenance of the mural. When more significant needs arise, such as repairing damage or renewing the anti-graffiti coating, SPSFO will be able to draw on funds held by the Lane Arts Council. A group of union members and retirees called the Mural Guardians will review any potential expense before money is removed from the Maintenance Fund.

The Need: We have seeded the Maintenance Fund with about $1,800 that remained after the repainting project. Unfortunately, that amount won’t go very far or last very long, so we are trying to get the fund up to $6,000. We hope you will assist us in that effort. One anti-graffiti coating, for example, costs about $3,500.
