A Lane Arts Council teaching artist recently led a multi-week arts integration program at a local school serving students who struggle in the traditional classroom. One teacher shared, “for many students, not achieving their ideal of perfection or ‘what looks good’ meant they should give up.”
During their time with the teaching artist, these students learned to persist and dive into the process, even when feeling unsure how to move forward. They became more engaged and curious in the classroom, and learned resilience to follow through with long-term work. “Thank you for giving us structure; assignments that break down big stuff into steps, like ways to think about things if we’re stuck, having a bad day, or don’t know what to do. We could try again a different way.”
The benefits of arts education are far-reaching, impacting young people in all areas of their lives. Creative expression supports mental health and wellbeing, and engages students in collaboration, problem-solving, and reflection. For many young people, the arts give them confidence to express their unique voice and identity.
We continue to hear how impactful our arts education and arts integration programs are for students. Your support is essential for us to ensure arts opportunities for Lane County students, schools, and communities.
Schools and community partners throughout the county look to Lane Arts Council as a primary provider of arts experiences for thousands of young learners each year. Many students are from rural and low-income families and have few or no arts opportunities. These requests are increasing as we expand our programs to reach more students, bring a wider range of artforms, and diversify our teaching artist roster.
For 45 years, Lane Arts Council has served local communities as Lane County’s centralized hub for arts and culture. We provide arts education, support artists and arts organizations, and create platforms that connect us through arts experiences. We need your help to ensure creativity in our communities and arts opportunities for all.
